Japan Association for Middle East Studies

Meetings

The 38th Annual Conference, 14-15 May 2022.

Dear members of the Japan Association for Middle East Studies,
We are pleased to announce that the 38th JAMES Annual Conference will be held on 14-15 May 2022 at Waseda University, hosted by the Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies program at Waseda.

Due to the Covid pandemic, the second day is set to be a hybrid event. The format of the second day will be announced in due course.

On the first day, the general meeting of JAMES and the public lecture will be held, with details to be announced in due course. On the second day, the research presentations will be held via a hybrid format (both in-person and online), and both presenters and audience will be able to participate in either way. Please note that the hybrid sessions might be shifted to fully online depending on the situation with the pandemic.

Dates and format:

Saturday, 14 May 2022: Public lecture and general meeting (details to be announced in due course)

Sunday, 15 May 2022: Research presentations, including both individual papers and organized panels (hybrid event)

Venue:

Toyama Campus, Waseda University
(The committee is considering subsidizing the cost of childcare during the conference for those who require it. Details to be announced in due course).

We are pleased to invite colleagues to submit proposals for both individual papers and panels by sending an email to: james2022waseda@list.waseda.jp. The deadline for all proposals is Friday, 14 January 2022 (Japanese Standard Time). Those members who choose to participate in person must bring their laptop for the presentation. Proposals for both papers and panels must include the following details:

1. Individual paper proposals (whether for in person or online)

(i) Email address
(ii) Name
(iii) Affiliation. Graduate students must specify this; those without an institutional affiliation can be stated as ‘member of JAMES’
(iv) Title (tentative titles are acceptable)
(v) Abstract (approximately 200 words)
(vi) Format of presentation. All presenters must specify the format in which the paper will be delivered, either in person or online.
(vii) Declaration that you have paid the annual membership fee for 2021. The applicant needs to have paid the fee before submitting the proposal.

2. Organized panel proposals (hybrid)

Organized panels can be held via a hybrid format if required, enabling both virtual and in person participation, but the chair must be present in person. Each organized panel must last 1.5 hours (including the comments and Q&A), and will typically have three papers. The panel must include a session organizer and a chair and may also include a commentator. The session organizer must also play one or more roles as presenter of a paper, chair, or the commentator. All members on the panel with the exception of the commentator must be fully paid-up members of JAMES. Paper presenters and commentators can choose to participate either in person or virtually, whereas the chair must be present in-person. In principle, we would also like the session organizer to be present in person, but for those with difficulties in this regard it is possible to negotiate on individual bases by contacting the organizing committee.

Organized panel proposals must include:

(i) Email address of the session organizer
(ii) Name of the session organizer
(iii) Affiliation of the session organizer. Graduate students must be specified; those without institutional affiliations must be stated ‘member of JAMES’
(iv) Title of the panel (tentative titles are accepted)
(v) Panel abstract (approximately 200 words)
(vi) Details of all participants in the panel: name, affiliation, and role on the panel
(vii) Abstracts for all three papers (approximately 200 words each)
(viii) Declaration by that the session organizer have paid the annual membership fee for JAMES 2021. The organizer needs to have paid the fee for before submitting the proposal.
